Commissioner's Message Archive 2002

09/24/02 8:20 PM

Jon Tepp is $410 richer. Congratulations on a fantastic season and the richest purse ever (tied with Jack's 1999 winnings)!

I'm not going to type a dissertation about the order of the finish. I think everything that needs to be said has been said on the Message Board. But I will end the "most dominant team ever" debate right here...

In 2000, Wayne Semmerling won 6 weekly prizes, won his division by 27.5 games, had a record 23 games better than the other division winner (Jack "Paper Tiger" George), and beat his playoff opponents 8-2 and 7-3 on his way to the championship.

Tepper won 10 weekly prizes, won his division by 15.5 games, had a record 13 games better then the other division winner (Cychosz), and beat his playoff opponents 7-3 and 6-4 on his way to the championship.

Weekly prizes do not a "most dominant" team make. Wayne's team is still the most dominant ever. And to seal the deal, Wayne's regular season winning percentage was 0.666. Tepp's was 0.631.

Notes
  • 51146 won week 24.

  • 51146 got 11 wins out of only 12 starts week 24, the highest single-week win total this year.

  • Drew won week 25. His other weekly win? Week 1.

  • Drew comes out of nowhere as the 8th seed to win the Consolation bracket. His last lineup change? August 15th. His last add? June 13th. I give up.

  • Because we aren't playing week 26 this year, there was an extra $5 weekly prize left over. I'm giving it to the team that had the most dominant single week (like I do in football). 51146 gets it for their week 4 performance.
See ya!

Thanks for playing this year. I hope everyone had a good time. You'll probably be hearing from me in a couple of months about a revamped Auction Rules Proposal.

09/22/02 3:25 PM

DT left me a message this weekend asking me to make a lineup change for him: bench Rusch and activate Nomo. I just got home Sunday afternoon and made the change, effective Saturday.

09/20/02 11:15 AM

Championship Bracket Round 2 scores going into the final weekend:

TEAM W S K ERA WHIP R HR RBI SB AVG TOT

Tepp 7 8 110 3.12 1.334 66 23 76 8 .2575 6
DT 6 9 88 3.30 1.165 77 14 74 7 .2912 4

51146 14 8 95 3.64 1.220 74 21 80 8 .3203 6.5
Jolly 10 9 106 3.17 1.272 66 21 63 7 .2540 3.5
Tepp, I'll ask you one more time. Nervous?

09/10/02 2:30 PM

I've been very busy the last couple weeks. Sorry I haven't had more to say here. This week's CLIFF'S Notes:

  • Tepp won week 22.

  • DT won week 23.

  • It's Tepp vs. DT for the championship. Tepper's O might be too much for DT. Check out these round 1 numbers: 101 R (2nd), 32 HR (1st), 102 RBI (1st), 11 SB (3rd), .3238 AVG (1st).

  • The Playoffs page has been updated.

09/09/02 10:15 AM

So there is no confusion, all ADD transactions effective today do count against your 2 ADD transactions limit. The King and 51146 each made 1. Cychosz made 2, so he can not add anyone else during playoff round 2.

From the playoff rules:

"Teams are allowed only 2 ADD transactions per playoff round. (Each round is 2 weeks long.) Transactions effective the first day of Round 1 do not count against the 2 ADD transactions because the playoffs haven't started yet; the team is setting their playoff roster, not changing it. Transactions effective the first day of Round 2 do count because the playoffs are well underway."

I'll be doing stats for the last two weeks and posting all results later tonight.

08/26/02 3:50 PM

I've done a lot of typing already today, so I'll give you the Cliff Notes version:

  • I won my third weekly prize.

  • For all of Jeff's rhetoric, he did not win the division. As a matter of fact, 51146 is the 4th seed.

  • Check out the new Traditional Scoring report.

  • Use the new Playoffs page to check your progress. Round 1 Week 1 begins this week!

08/19/02 2:30 PM

Tepper won week 20, his 9th weekly win, with the 3rd highest point total this season, 84. Oh, and he kicked my ass.

DT continues to amaze, winning 7-3 yet again. He now has the 2nd best record in the league. He cannot win the division, but I wouldn't want to play him in the 1st round of the playoffs.

The 4 playoff teams are set, but who will win the Ground Rule Double division? With Jolly Roger playing War Pigs and 51146 playing me, the question is who can beat up on their opponent more. 10-0 anyone?

Playoff Rules

This is the last week of the regular season, so it's time to brush up on the Playoff Rules. Key is the Transactions During the Playoffs section:
Teams are allowed only 2 ADD transactions per playoff round. (Each round is 2 weeks long.) Transactions effective the first day of Round 1 do not count against the 2 ADD transactions because the playoffs haven't started yet; the team is setting their playoff roster, not changing it. Transactions effective the first day of Round 2 do count because the playoffs are well underway.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the Playoff Rules.

08/12/02 5:00 PM

Jack won week 18, his first weekly prize of the year. 51146 won week 19, their fifth, but their first since week 11.

After week 8, DT was a miserable 30-44-6, the second worst record in the league. Eleven weeks later, he's got the third best record in the league and the best record among non-division leaders. How'd he do it? Not just by winning, but by winning big. He's won 9 of his last 11 matchups. But more importantly, he's won 7 of those matchups 7-3 or 8-2.

The current Wild Card picture:

Team GB
King WormDog --
Jolly Roger 10.5
Team DT 11.5
Team 51146 13.0
Lumberjacks 18.5
Augie Fade 22.0
This list has changed very little since I last published it 3 weeks ago. The order hasn't changed at all.

I included everyone .500 and above just so I could put my name on the list. But with only 2 weeks left in the regular season, the reality of the situation is I'm out of it. And unless Jack kicks DT's ass this week, he's out of it too.

Cychosz and 51146 are still battling for their division. Cychosz has led most of the way, but 51146 just won't go away. DT has a very outside shot at his division. Wouldn't that by something?

Trivia: There hasn't been a 10-0 drubbing this year.

08/01/02 5:22PM

Chaos does not reign, not under my watch. Christensen will be dealt with.

But in the meantime, if any owners want one of the dropped players before they are off of waivers, let me know via email. It will be a first come, first served. Let me know who to drop to add them and I will make it happen.

Lieutenant Commissioner Jack George

07/31/02 10:40 PM

Coughlin's team won the weekly prize last week. All it took was a hostile takeover to turn that team around.

Tepper set a new SO high with 90. Colin tied Tepper's R high of 64.

Including this week, there are only 4 weeks left in our regular season.

There was a lot of great discussion about the Auction Rules Proposal. I'm going to let it go for a while, gather everyone's input, and resubmit the proposal later with changes.

I'll be on vacation and nowhere near the Internet until Monday, August 12. Lieutenant Commissioner Jack George is in charge until then.

See ya!

07/22/02 2:07 PM

The current Wild Card picture:

Team GB
King WormDog --
Jolly Roger 10.5
Team DT 13.5
Team 51146 16.0
Lumberjacks 18.5
Augie Fade 20.5
I've produced another Traditional Scoring Report. Take a look. It tells the tale of the last five weeks.
  • After week 11, I ranked 4th in traditional scoring. Now I rank 2nd. So why have I fallen to 6th in head-to-head? Bad fucking luck, I guess. (Here I go again, Colin. My annual late-season whine-fest.)

  • Christensen and Cychosz have both fallen a spot from week 11 to week 16.

  • Meanwhile, DT has charged from 10th to 6th and is now 3rd in head-to-head. That is one helluva comeback!
Just to give you an example of DT's Cychosz-in-2001-like comeback: I was up 9-1 going into Sunday. He beat me 5.5-4.5 after my pitchers got lit up and just about everyone on his team had a least 1 R and 1 RBI on Sunday. And he was on his honeymoon the whole week!

I get another chance. I play DT again this week. I need to win 9-1 like nobody's business.

07/15/02 4:05 AM

I won week 15. But that didn't keep DT and his 8-2 victory from widening the gap.

The current Wild Card picture is below. (Sorry Jeff.) I'm including Tepper because DT is only 13 GB in the division! Might there be a Tepper Tumble?

Team GB
King WormDog --
Jolly Roger 7.5
Team DT 13.0
Team 51146 13.5
Lumberjacks 18.5
Augie Fade 18.5
Some great matchups this week. Two heated rivalries, 51146 vs. 51147 and Cychosz vs. Tepper, and my chance to gain ground on David -- The Fade vs. Team DT.

Congratulations! DT got married on Saturday. And just as important, Kurt "Lick" Miller's birthday was also Saturday.

07/13/02 5:40 PM

You Want the Truth? Read Jack Nic... I mean Jeff Christensen's new article.

51147... Finally a logo you can be proud of.

07/09/02 8:00 PM

Jeff has responded to the proposal. Find the "Top News" box on the League Home page and click "More News."

07/08/02 3:00 AM

The wild card race is heating up. This week's weekly winner was Tepp (yawn), but 2-4 went DT, Augie, Jack. 51146 was 5th, but I promised Jeff I wouldn't mention him and the words "wild card" in the same sentence.

DT is really getting on my nerves. No more than 2.5 games separate DT, Jack, and I.

Cychosz had a horrible week, placing last in the weekly prize standings. But he still managed to squeek by Drew and get the division lead back... for now.

07/04/02 12:00 PM

Correction. DT has only one ADD transaction since April 27. He has made dozens of lineup changes since then.

07/01/02 9:20 PM

David Taylor has made only one lineup change since April 27, replacing Kile with Milton on June 24. DT beat Tepper, won the weekly prize, and is now 3.5 games in front of me.

It's a mission statement...

I believe adopting an auction-style draft, player salaries, player contracts (keepers), and team salary caps will promote trading among playoff contenders and non-contenders alike.

I've drafted an Auction Rules Proposal. The All-Star Break is almost here, and so is the fantasy baseball boredom it brings. Use the free time to read my proposal and let me know what you think. Let's use the Message Board to talk about it.

There is a lot to read in the proposal, but I'm serious about it and need to know what you think. And before you read the word "keepers" and immediately tell me to "go to hell," really think about it and read my reasoning in the MISSION STATEMENT section.

06/30/02 4:30 AM

Wow! Every matchup but one tied 5-5 going into Sunday. And the one is 5.5-4.5!

06/24/02 2:15 PM

Tepper won his 6th weekly prize, beating Jack by 12 points.

Seeger had a horrible week. Worst R, SB, AVG, and point total this year.

Cychosz is one game back in the division, but still has the 3rd best record in the league.

DT is only a half game back of me in the division. Playoff race: Tepper's in. It's a 5-way race for the other three spots: 51146, Cychosz, Jack, Augie, and DT.

06/17/02 1:25 PM

On the Message Board this morning, Christensen said, "Just because we haven't been shit talkin' doesn't mean that we haven't been busy." He's got that right! After winning the weekly prize on their way to a 9-1 ass kicking of Cychosz, Team 51146 is only 2 games back in the division.

Tepper won again. He's 9-2 and clearly running away with the division. Barring a Tepper tumble, Jack and I will be battling for 2nd. But let's not forget about DT. His 8-2 victory this week and a mid-season surge could make things interesting.

Speaking of mid-season, the fantasy baseball regular season is half over. 11 of the 21 regular seasons weeks have been played. So I thought it would be interesting to tally the year-to-date statistics. Take a look at the Traditional Scoring report on the AFSN GOBN Home Page to see how things would be if we used a traditional scoring system (as opposed to head-to-head). Tepper Would be 1st or 2nd in every pitching category. And he'd be 2nd or 3rd in every hitting category except HR.

It seems like I ask this every year now, but will Tepper's performance be the most dominating in AFSN history? In 2000, Wayne Semmerling won 6 weekly prizes, won his division by 27.5 games, had a record 23 games better than the other division winner (Jack "Paper Tiger" George), and beat his playoff opponents 8-2 and 7-3 on his way to the championship. Tepper has 5 weekly prizes already, is leading his division by 15 games, and has a record 10.5 games better then the other division leader, Cychosz.

06/10/02 12:25 PM

Queen WormDog won the weekly prize, his fifth. I set new highs in ERA and WHIP.

Sad to say, the way things are going, I'm inclined to agree with Cychosz. Maybe we should just move to the championsip game and pit Cychosz against WormDog and get this over with. GOB Network, it's time to get to work, and collusion is key.

06/04/02 11:40 AM

This week's notes:

  • I put Christensen in his place and won the weekly prize.
  • DT put away Colin. Colin, what's happening?
  • Team 51147 is too busy writing emails about Grand Ams to actually participate in fantasy baseball. They lose 6.5 - 3.5.
  • Drew is hanging in there, winning 2 of his last 3.

05/28/02 9:10 PM

Team 51146 won the weekly prize for the 3rd time and the 2nd time in a row. Yawn. I guess if I want something done right, I'll have to do it myself. With great power comes great responsibility.

05/20/02 12:40 PM

Tepper didn't win this week's prize, but Jeff & Jay did. Drew, you're the only other one who's won a week. Please rescue us!

Jeff & Jay beat Lick (former 51146 owner) & Lou 7-3. I don't know what the series record is since the split in 2001, but Jeff & Jay are up... WAY up.

Cychosz beat Tepper. These two former "Eight Ball" owners have faired well since their split in 2001. A case of the parts being greater than the sum.

Drew is holding his own, beating up on Dan this week and staying in the wild card hunt.

Get on the bus, ladies. The Augie Fade is in reverse and aiming for its arch rival, Jack "one nut" George.

05/13/02 3:00 PM

If last week was enough to make you want to puke, this week I'm in a full-bore chunk-blowing dry heave. Tepper wins again. He's 4 for 6.

05/07/02 8:20 AM

Tepper won the weekly prize... again. It's enough to make you want to puke. Details are available on the AFSN GOBN Home Page.

04/30/02 11:10 PM

Wow! Almost an entire month without a Commissioner's Message. Are you okay? Well, I'm back and here's the latest...

The first four weeks of weekly statistics are complete. The weekly winners were Drew Dockery ("Rookie Wins Opening Week!"), Jon Tepp, Jon Tepp, and Team 51146.

Also new, the "Best/Worst Week" report and a "2002 Draft Photo Gallery." Check them out at the AFSN GOBN Home Page.

Lastly, if you missed Lick's "Breaking News: Message Board Is Stupid" news article, find the "Top News" box on the League Home page and click "More News." Weird Al rocks!

03/19/02 4:35 AM

I can't sleep so the new 21-week regular season schedule is set. The highlights through the first 7 weeks:

WK Matchup
 1 51146 vs. Colin
 2 51146 vs. Cychosz
 3 Tepper vs. 51147
 3 Jack vs. Augie
 5 51146 vs. Tepper
 5 Colin vs. Seeger
 7 51146 vs. 51147
 7 Cychosz vs. Tepper

One scheduling snafu. Team DT and I play back-to-back weeks, weeks 16 and 17. I'm hoping those are two weeks DT isn't paying attention.
