Commissioner's Message Archive 2006

09/26/06 11:05 PM

Matt Coughlin is your 2006 GOBN Champion! He beat #1 seed Tepp 6-4. Tepp sat all his starting pitchers and went closer-heavy the final week. He preserved his lead in ERA and WHIP and passed Coughlin in Saves, but like Matt eluded to in his Message Board post, Ichiro's 2 SB's on Sunday gave him the 13-12 lead in SB's and the championship. Congratulations, Lou. It is much deserved.

And congratulations to Tepp, too. He finished second, won his division, 11.5 Weekly Winner prizes, and the Best Week prize for a grand total of $322.50. So don't feel too sorry for him. (He also "won" Traditional Scoring with 89.5 points, the highest point total in GOBN history. Dockery is second with 88 points in 2004 when he won it all.)

Coughlin only won two Weekly Winner prizes, but one of them was the final week when he set GOBN 2006 highs with 24 HR and 72 RBI.

Seeger finished 3rd, Cychosz 4th. #8 seed Jack George climbed into 5th place with a great playoff run. #9 seed Colin Walsh climbed into 6th.

09/18/06 10:15 PM

Tepp won Week 24 with 75.5 points, his fourth win in a row and his fifth win in the last six weeks. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Tepp is leading Coughlin 6-3-1 in the championship game, but it is close!

09/11/06 2:37 PM

Tepp won Week 23 with 83 points. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Check the Playoffs page for all of the Round 1 results. It's Tepp v. Coughlin for the championship!

Tepp v. Coughlin

Tepp only lost five times this season. Three of those losses were to Coughlin who beat Tepp every time they played this year, and not just by a little: 3-7, 3-7, 2-7-1.

Coughlin also beat Tepp 9-1 in Round 2 of the 2005 Playoffs to win fifth place.

Needless to say, Coughlin has become Tepp's nemesis. Will Tepp overcome or will Coughlin continue to dominate Tepp?

Coughlin is certainly deserving of a shot at the championship. He was third in Traditional Scoring and Breakdown last year and didn't make the playoffs. He is second in Traditional Scoring (to Tepp) and third in Breakdown this year.

Tepp's last appearance in the playoffs was 2003. He won it all in 2002.

This is Coughlin's first playoff appearance.

Good luck, gentlemen. And to hell with football (see poll). There is still a GOBN Championship to be won!

09/04/06 4:20 PM

Tepp won Week 22 with 89.5 points, the new "Best Week" mark. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Tepp is pouring it on when it counts. He's up 9-1 over Seeger. Coughlin is up by a much closer 5-4-1 margin over Cychosz.

08/28/06 1:50 PM

Tepp won Week 21 with 71.5 points. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Cychosz has lead the Ground Rule Double division twice -- Week 1 and Week 21. Cychosz is your GRD division champion! He beat Seeger 7-2-1 last week, the exact score he needed to win the division outright.

The Playoffs are set.

08/21/06 4:40 PM

Seeger won Week 20 with 69 points, the new season low to win. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Seeger, Cychosz, and Coughlin are all on a roll, hot at exactly the right time. Tepp lost again this week. He's still going to win the division, but he only leads Coughlin by 9.5 games. If Coughlin had a few more weeks...

Cychosz is only 4 games back of Seeger for their division crown, and they play each other this week!

The last time Cychosz lead that division was Week 1. Seeger has lead it the rest of the way. Amazing.

If Seeger loses 3-6-1 or does better than that, he wins the division.

If Cychosz wins 7-2-1 or better, he wins the division.

If Cychosz wins exactly 7-3, it will go to a tie-breaker:

  1. The first tie-breaker is head-to-head record. They will be even at 1-1-1.
  2. The next tie-breaker is season ERA -- Cychosz 4.092 and Seeger 4.084 as of now.
  3. The final tie-breaker is season AVG -- Cychosz .2888 and Seeger .2590 as of now.

08/14/06 2:40 PM

Tepp won Week 19 with 71 points. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

The four playoff teams are set. Tepp won his division (obviously). Seeger and Cychosz are still duking it out in their division (Cychosz is 4 games back). And Coughlin is the other Wild Card team. (Congratulations, Lou! Well deserved and a long time coming.)

I was wrong about Team 51146, but who can blame me? They have rallied to make the playoffs every year... except this year. They are currently tied with DT, 13 games out of the Wild Card race with only two weeks to go.

The Winning Percentage Chart has never been more telling. Look at Weeks 12 and 13 -- how close Seeger, DT, Coughlin, 51146, and Cychosz were. Then follow those lines to the right and watch their paths diverge, especially over the last four weeks.

08/07/06 9:15 PM

Cychosz won Week 18 with 70 points, the lowest total to win this season. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Cychosz v. 51146

Cychosz beat Walsh 6-3-1 last week.

Team 51146 lost to Dockery (Dockery!) 3-6-1.

Cychosz pulled within 4.5 games of Seeger for the division.

Team 51146 dropped 9.5 out of the wild card, 0.5 game behind the already-declared-out-of-it Team DT.

The early poll results indicate the league thinks Team 51146 is done.

Wk Cychosz 51146 Seeger
19 DT Seeger 51146
20 Dockery Tepp Walsh
21 Seeger Walsh Cychosz
Tepp v. Coughlin

Tepp's winning percentage drops to 0.650 for the first time since week 7 while losing to Coughlin 2-7-1 last week.

Tepp has only lost four times this season. Three of those losses are to Coughlin who has beat Tepp every time they've played this year, and not just by a little: 3-7, 3-7, 2-7-1.

07/31/06 12:51 PM

Seeger won Week 17 with 75.5 points. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Weekly Winner Count

Tepp 6.5
Seeger 5.5 (3 of last 4)
Cychosz 3 (inc BW 88 pts)
51146 1
Coughlin 1
Cychosz v. 51146

This has gotten very interesting. With Cychosz's 7-3 win over 51146 last week -- his second win in a row, setting GOBN 2006 season bests in R, HR, and RBI -- Cychosz is 6.5 games ahead of 51146 in the Wild Card race. And just as impressive, he's only 5 games back of Seeger for the division championship.

Cychosz and 51146 have three common opponents the next four weeks, but 51146 has to play Tepp. Cychosz and Seeger may be playing for the division the final week of the regular season:

Wk Cychosz 51146 Seeger
18 Walsh Dockery George
19 DT Seeger 51146
20 Dockery Tepp Walsh
21 Seeger Walsh Cychosz
Team DT Hate Mail

Since I wrote the following after Week 14, DT is 7-23 and has fallen 8.5 games back in the Wild Card race. He's so mad that he's been sending me hateful emails at work every couple of days. He can exact some revenge this week as he squares off against the Augie Upswing.

From the 07/10/06 Commissioner's Message: Speaking of wild cards, let's talk about DT. He's in the Triple Play division (Tepp's division), so he's fighting for a Wild Card spot. He's tied with his division-mate, Coughlin, for the two Wild Card spots as of now. However, DT ranks only sixth in Traditional Scoring and Breakdown. That's last among all contending teams! He did just make a trade and his first transaction, but as of now, I think Team DT is the most likely team to slide out of the Wild Card race. (Sorry, dude.)

07/24/06 4:55 PM

Cychosz won Week 16 with 82 points. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

07/17/06 2:30 PM

Seeger won Week 15 with 76 points. The Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Tepp was lucky to tie Jack this week -- he was down going into Sunday. Obviously, Your American Idol is having a great season and could win his division with one arm tied behind his back the rest of the way, but a slight crack may be starting. Tepp's winning percentage dropped to 0.660, the first time is has been that low since it was 0.650 after Week 7. But not to worry -- he's got Dockery this week.

07/10/06 11:55 PM

Seeger won Week 14 with 77.5 points, beating Coughlin by only 0.5 points. All four Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

All but two Weekly Winner prizes have been won by Seeger, Tepp, and Cychosz. (Team 51146 and Coughlin won weeks 4 and 5 respectively.)

On a week-by-week basis, Tepp is 11-3. He lost to DT 4-6 in week 3 and Coughlin twice 3-7, including this past week, Tepp's first loss since he played Coughlin the last time in week 5. Curse or Coughlin? You decide.

Standings Breakdown

Tepp is going to win the Triple Play division and Coughlin is a legitimate Wild Card contender. Dockery, George, Augustine, and Walsh... forgetaboutit. That leaves the Ground Rule Double division, which is a mess...

Seeger leades the division and has the second best record in the league, but Cychosz and Team 51146 lead Seeger in Traditional Scoring and Breakdown. (Cychosz has the second best Breakdown record in the league!) I predict a three-way dog fight for the division with one Wild Card team coming from the division.

Speaking of wild cards, let's talk about DT.

TP Div Winner = Tepp

GRD Div Winner = Seeger (due to a VERY favorable schedule: Augustine, Dockery, George, and Walsh coming up)

Wild Cards =
Coughlin (#3 seed)
Team 51146 (#4 seed, because I know first hand how lucky those bastards are)

Cychosz is going to be the tough luck team, missing out on a Wild Card spot by 1/2 a game or something.

07/03/06 11:59 PM

Tepp won Week 13 with 82 points, his 6th outright win this year and third in a row! All four Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Speaking of Tepper's dominance, after his 10-0 thumping of the Fade... I mean the Upswing, his winning percentage sits at a cool 0.700. He also set a GOBN record with 94 strikeouts this week. We might as well declare him the champion right now. [wink]

Colin Walsh missed the weekly AVG record by 1/10,000th of a point. His Crickets batted 0.3728 for the week. Jack batted 0.3729 during a week in 2000.

All of the pre-2006 records are in the Record Book. The "League" records are accurate. Ignore "By Team" and "vs Opponent." An explanation of what the symbols mean is here.

06/26/06 1:07 PM

Tepp won Week 12 with 73 points, his 5th outright win this year and second in a row. All four Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

After pointing out Drew's slide last week, he beat Colin 7-3 and is now only 5 games out of a Wild Card spot. Of course, there's nothing better than playing Colin, Jack, or I to help cure what ails you.

Speaking of Colin, he had one of the worst weeks on record, posting only 23 points in Traditional Scoring. That's the worst total since Dan's 17 in 2003. Colin also set league 2006 lows in W (0), ERA (11.18), and WHIP (1.992). And no, he didn't bench all of his starters or something -- he had 7 starts.

Addendum (1:11 PM): Colin's 11.18 Week 12 ERA is the worst weekly ERA on record. (The first Best/Worst Week report was published in 2000.) His 1.992 WHIP is the worst since Jack's 2.013 WHIP in 2001 (the worst on record).

06/19/06 12:00 PM

Tepp won Week 11 with 78.5 points, his 4th outright win this year. All four Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Take a look at Drew's slide on the Winning Percentage Chart. He hasn't won since Week 4 (he's tied four times) and is on his way to Jack/Colin/Augie land if he doesn't right the ship soon.

The Office of the Commissioner has no comment at this time regarding Mr. F. Lee Bailey's brief. If the Commissioner chooses to respond at all, he will release a statement via the GOBN Public Affairs office later this week.

06/12/06 12:30 PM

Cychosz won Week 10 with 88 points, a new 2006 high score. All four Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

My regular season performance last year was fairly dominating, my winning percentage never dipping below 0.600 after Week 8. But my performance pales in comparison to Tepp's this year so far. Tepp's winning percentage hasn't been below 0.600 since Week 5 and has been at 0.650 or higher the last four weeks.

A new Weekly Report -- the Wild Card Standings will be updated every week from now on.

The Weekly Reports are easier to navigate now too. Open any Weekly Report and look at the top for links to all other Weekly Reports and Weekly Winner statistics.

06/05/06 12:50 PM

Tepp won Week 9 with 74.5 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

The two participants in the "matchup to beat all matchups" finished 1st and 2nd in the Weekly Winner standings.

If Coughlin's team is the best example of a good team (2nd in breakdown) having a bad record (5th overall), DT's team is the opposite. He's 6th in breakdown yet has the 2nd best record.

05/29/06 3:06 PM

Cychosz won Week 8 with 76.5 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

05/22/06 11:56 AM

Dan Seeger won Week 7 with 74 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

We're 1/3 of the way through the regular season.

P.S. Closers suck.

05/15/06 7:15 PM

Tepp won Week 6 with 81 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

05/08/06 4:55 PM

The Transactions Log has been posted. I cannot process the transactions until later tonight. In the meantime, some...

Random Transaction Notes

Someone was finally willing to take the chance that Bronson Arroyo can keep it up. Actually, four people were willing to take that chance, but Tepper got him for $11. It's Esteban Loaiza in 2003 all over again. Maybe I need to break out "The Arroyo Meter."

Surprise, surprise. Jack dropped Livan Hernandez. The odds on Jack picking him back up in the next two weeks are 3:1. The odds on Jack picking him back up sometime this season... 1:1, you can count on it.

Someone finally picked up Wandy Rodriguez. We've all been looking at him, admit it. But it took this long for someone to figure out who he was and where he came from.

05/08/06 4:15 PM

Coughlin won Week 5 with 77.5 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

05/01/06 9:15 PM

Team 51146 won Week 4 with a whopping 87 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Random Notes

I spent $59 on closers and have only won Saves once.

David Weathers? Former Brewer David Weathers is a "closer?" If he's what passes for a closer nowadays, the term closer should no longer be used. Dennis Eckersley was a closer. Lee Smith was a closer. Goose Gossage was a closer. You sir, Mr. Weathers, are no Goose Gossage.

Sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Fame caliber pitcher Craig Biggio is now available.

Three keepers were dropped this week: A.J. Burnett, Francisco Cordero, and Oliver Perez.

Team 51146 had such a good week, they've vaulted to the top of the Traditional Scoring report.

04/24/06 11:25 PM

Dan Seeger won Week 3 with 73.5 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

04/17/06 10:35 PM

Dan Seeger and Jon Tepp will split the Week 2 Weekly Winner prize. Both scored 73 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

I don't know how the GOBN season is going to shake out, but I do know Dockery can belch... a lot!

04/10/06 3:57 PM

We have our first Weekly Winner of 2006. Tepp won Week 1 with 78.5 points. All three Weekly Reports (below) have been updated.

Transactions Log

Team 51146's $31 free agent bid for Danys Baez ties a GOBN record. The only other bid that high was the very first bid in GOBN history -- March 31, 2003. Cychosz bid $31 on Jamie Moyer (who he kept all year).

Cychosz dropped Gagne. I won't recap his comment here, but it had something to do with his French last name and kitty cats.

Rule 14.7 Gagne was long-termed, so Cychosz is responsible for his $34 salary for the reminder of the 2006 season. I've added a 27th entry to his roster to accommodate that.

Rule 14.7.1 Gagne immediately becomes a free agent. Unlike the rest of the players dropped this week, he is not on waivers next week.

03/13/06 8:25 PM

The 2006 GOBN draft will take place
