9/23/2008 12:40 AM Congratulations Brad Cychosz, league's most hated man, on your third league championship! (Brad also won in 2001 and 2003.) The Championship Bracket got turned upside down. Finishers 1-4 were seeds 4-1. Brad is the fourth Wild Card team in a row to win the championship -- the second #4 seed in a row (Dan Seeger last year). The Consolation Bracket went almost by seed: 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 8. Jack won the Consolation Bracket to take 5th. He had a phenomenal Round 2. He won the Weekly Winner prize for the final week, tying Drew Dockery's Week 8 season high of 91.5 points. Colin won a tie-breaker! He placed 6th overall after beating Team 51146 via tie-breaker in Round 2. 9/9/2008 9:35 PM The following reports have been updated:
Telling statistics:
8/19/2008 12:30 AM Damn, the Wild Card Standings are close. Really close! Only one week to go! 8/12/2008 11:45 PM Dockery won Week 19 with 80.5 points. All Weekly Reports have been updated (links below). Coughlin overtakes Tepper for the division lead after an 8-2 win over DT (and an 8-1-1 win over Augie the week before). The Asshats are hot at the right time of year! Seeger on the other hand... what happened? He had the 2nd best record in the league through Week 16 despite four losses in a row in Weeks 14-17. He only had a total of 13 wins in that span. He got back on his feet with a 7-3 win over Dockery in Week 18. He tied Tepper last week. What does the future hold? He ends the regular season with creampuffs 51146 then his arch rival, Mr. Colin Walsh. Cychosz... what can you say... once again he is streaking. He's won 7 weeks in a row and is in position to make the playoffs yet again. Up next: Asshats then War Pigs. Damn, the Wild Card Standings are close! Only 1 game separates four teams, and Jack is only 3 games out. Look at the Magic Numbers... 20 with 2 weeks to go. That means it is definitely going to come down to the final week! I can't remember a closer Wild Card race in GOBN history, can you? 8/5/2008 8:08 PM Cychosz won Week 18 with 80.5 points. All Weekly Reports have been updated (links below). DT has fallen to 13 GB of a Wild Card spot after his 3-7 loss to Colin last week. 7/30/2008 11:55 PM Stats for weeks 13-17 are finally done! Week 13
All Weekly Reports have been updated (links below). Drew only leads Tepp by 1 point in Traditional Scoring. Perhaps Drew isn't as dominant as his record indicates. And perhaps, to my chagrin, Tepp is just as good as always. Wild Card Standings - Drew's magic number is only 18.5. Only 2 games separate teams 2-4. Teams 5-7 are 5 or fewer games back of a wild card spot. In other words, Drew's in, but 6 other teams are vying for the remaining 3 spots. Illustrated another way, only 7 games separate teams 2-7. A picture is worth a thousand words: Winning Percentage Chart Let the final push begin! Including this week, only four weeks to go in our regular season. 6/23/2008 11:10 PM Drew won Week 11 with 73.5 points. I won Week 12 with 71.5 points and could still only manage a 5-5 tie with Jack. All Weekly Reports have been updated (links below). Drew has a .708 winning percentage. No one since the Winning Percentage Chart was created in 2006 has gone this deep with such a high percentage. And no one has finished the regular season with such a high percentage. We may be witnessing history if Drew can keep it up. 6/23/2008 11:10 PM Drew won Week 11 with 73.5 points. All of the Weekly Reports have been updated (links below). Commissioner Ramblings Only 3.5 games seperate the top 4 teams in the Triple Play division. Meanwhile, Drew is scorching hot and has opened a 10.5 game lead over Seeger in the Double Play division. (Dan would be leading the Triple Play division by a few games.) Tepper retools after his three-week 7-21-2 slide, picking up 4 new players. Jack had 10 starts in Week 9... and 0 wins. Not as bad, Colin: 11 starts, 1 win. Tepp: 9 starts, 2 wins. After this week (Week 10) we'll pretty much be halfway through our regular season (21 weeks). Is it just me, or did that go really fast? 5/27/2008 1:00 AM Week Six's Commissioner's Trivia Question The Red Sox have a runner at third base and one out. The batter hits a long fly ball to right center against the Yankee pitcher. The ball deflects off the RF's glove and floats into the CF's glove for the out. Can the runner tag up after the ball touches the RF's glove? Yes: 5
Answer Yes. A runner can legally tag up and advance as soon as a fielder touches the ball. He does not have to wait until a fielder "possesses" the ball. Additional information from Mike Hennings: "Do you know why they implemented the rule that way? In the old days, some of the Outfielders would juggle the ball back into the infield so the runners could not tag!! This got rid of that." Source: "Sit & Solve Baseball Trivia" by Dom Forker & Wayne Stewart 5/5/2008 7:35 PM Tepper won Week 5 with 80 points. All Weekly Reports (below) have been updated. Commissioner Ramblings Refreshing to see Drew at the top of his division. But I am sick and tired of seeing Tepp at the top of ours. From now on, I am officially routing for anyone but Tepp to win our division, even if it's not me. (Nothing personal, Tepper.) Last week's Commissioner's Trivia Question 1977: Ken Brett of the White Sox was pitching. Brian Downing the DH. Brett pitched 7, but in the 8th, he ran into trouble. Sox manager Bob Lemon didn't want to remove Brett from the game entirely because he was a good hitter. (In '73, he hit HR's in 4 consecutive games -- a record for pitchers.) Lemon switched Brett to 1B on defense. If no other move was made, who did he replace in the batting order? 1B: 3
Answer DH. Once the game pitcher is switched from the mound to a defensive position, this move shall terminate the DH role for the rest of the game. Rule 6.10 [b]. Downing had to be taken out of the lineup. (An aside, but related: If the game pitcher were to pitch-hit and not necessarily play defense, he can only pitch-hit for the DH.) Source: "Sit & Solve Baseball Trivia" by Dom Forker & Wayne Stewart 4/28/2008 10:05 PM Jack won Week 4 with 73.5 points. All Weekly Reports (below) have been updated. Last week's Commissioner's Trivia Question With the bases loaded, the left-handed pitcher, with his foot on the rubber, tries to pick off the runner on first base instead of pitching to the plate. But the ball sails wildly into the first-base seats. How far can the runers advance? One: 4
Answer Each runner can advance one base. The rule is one base if the pitcher was on the rubber. If he had stepped off the rubber and thrown the ball into the stands, he would have been penalized two bases per runner. If he had taken a return throw from the catcher, in front of the rubber, and hurled the ball into the first-base stands, he also would have been penalized two bases per runner. Chuck Stobbs of the 1956 Senators found himself in the hurler's situation. Pitching to the Tigers' Bob Kennedy, with his pivot foot on the rubber, he "picked off" a fan in the first-base boxes. Each runner "picked up" a base on the play. Source: "Sit & Solve Baseball Trivia" by Dom Forker & Wayne Stewart 4/21/2008 10:45 PM Drew won Week 3 with 83.5 points. All Weekly Reports (below) have been updated. Last week's Commissioner's Trivia Question The batter has a count of 2-2 when he swings and misses. But the ball hits the batter's fist and bounces into foul territory down the first-base line. The cather picks up the ball and throws it to the first baseman who steps on the base. Did the defense have to make the above play? Yes: 0
Answer No. The batter is out, and the ball becomes dead as soon as it hits the batter. In order for it to have been a foul ball, it would have had to hit the bat before it hit the batter. A batter is out when he attempts to hit a third strike and the ball touches him. Rule 6.05 [7]. Source: "Sit & Solve Baseball Trivia" by Dom Forker & Wayne Stewart 4/14/2008 2:45 PM Last week's Commissioner's Trivia Question The Official Baseball Rules specifies that no bat can be longer than 42 inches or more than 2 3/4 inches in diameter. Does it also limit the weight of the bat? Yes: 2
Answer No, it doesn't. Hack Miller of the 1922-23 Cubs claimed he used a 65-ounce bat. In those two seasons, the only ones in which he had a sufficient number of at-bats, he batted .352 and .301 respectively. In 1923, he hit a career-high 20 homers. Babe Ruth, the "Sultan of Swat," at times used a 52-ounce bat. He, of course, batted .342 lifetime and hit 714 career home runs. Source: "Sit & Solve Baseball Trivia" by Dom Forker & Wayne Stewart 4/14/2008 2:39 PM Tepper won Week 2 with 75.5 points. All Weekly Reports (below) have been updated. DT's comment regarding his Mark Reynolds bid: I'm probably overpaying, Augie, but I want this dude!! No, DT, you paid exactly how much you needed to get him... jerk. (See the Transactions Log.) 4/8/2008 9:04 PM New daddy DT won Week 1 with 67 points. All Weekly Reports (below) have been updated. Colin still won 8-2 last week. 4/7/2008 5:23 PM Cychosz screws a fellow GOBN owner with each of his transactions. (See the Transactions Log.) Colin had 13 starts in Week 1. He loses Wang's shutout Sunday. But don't cry for Colin. He had great pitching all week, including three other stellar starts on Sunday. It is doubtful the change will affect Colin's 8-2 victory over Team 51146, but we won't know for sure until the site is updated Tuesday morning. Same goes for Weekly Winner stats and reports. I'll have to wait until the site gets updated.
