Commissioner's Message Archive

12/27/03 6:00 PM

Check your email for my final message.

12/24/03 6:20 PM

Congratulations 2003 CNN/SI Sucks Champion Wade Kizewski! Wade also won the $20 Total Points prize... by kicking my ass in the Championship game.

The Final Standings and updated Playoff brackets are here. I'll update everyone's total winnings and the Fantasy Sports Money Lists after the holidays.

Merry Christmas!

12/09/03 7:00 PM

The updated League Championship and Consolation brackets are here.

Playoff Round 1 is over and, unlike the BCS, there is no championship game controversy. Wade and I will be playing for the CNN/SI Sucks 2003 Championship trophy.

In the Consolation bracket, Brad and Marc are playing for 5th place (and a lap dance with Desire).

Guess who had Clinton Portis? Marc scored 144 points, won the weekly prize, and moved into position to win the $10 Best Week prize.

Wade has taken a five point Total Points lead over me. Our championship matchup will determine the $20 Total Points winner.

Random Notes

  • Four of five matchups were won by the higher seed. Wade vs. Jack was the exception.
  • All five teams that were leading after Round 1 Week 1 won their Round 1 matchup, though myself and Russ tried to give our matchups away this week.
  • I just realized that everyone in the Consolation bracket had a losing regular season record.
  • Jack would've beaten everybody in Round 1 except the team he played and Clinton Portis.

12/02/03 8:45 PM

The updated League Championship and Consolation brackets are here.

The closet playoff margin is 22 points. It was all about the blowouts last week.

Jack came up big with 100 points, but Wade almost tied his own 142 point "Best Week" score. We may be living in the BIZARRO world with Jack and I in the championship bracket, but Wade is doing his best to return us to the 3rd dimension.

Brad continued his playoff dominance over Colin (carrying over from baseball). Brad is up 105-61.

Good luck to everyone but Tepp & Cordray!

Playoff Time!

The League Championship and Consolation brackets are here.

Seeds 5-8 in the Consolation bracket have a chance at the $20 fifth place prize. The best seeds 9 and 10 can do is sixth place.

Even though each round of the playoffs is two weeks long, you can pick up players and change your lineup each week, just like the regular season.

Weekly Wins: The highest score each week still wins $5.

Total Points: The $20 total points prize is not awarded until the playoffs are over. So the points you accumulate in the playoffs count.

Good luck, gentlemen!

Monday Night Update

Tepp, you lucky son of a bitch. Tepp/Cordray win the second wild card spot because Amani Toomer short-armed that deep pass down the middle. That means Parker did not win the wild card spot and, of course, the Giants lost the game.

Parker lost to George by 9 points. The deep pass to Toomer would have more than made up for those points -- 8 points for the long TD plus the yardage, at least 4 more points.

11/23/03 7:30 PM

Sunday Night Update

With the Sunday night football game yet to be played...

Tepp/Cordray are going to lose. (From the "if only" file, they played Plummer (11 pts) instead of Hasselback (35 pts) this week.) So if Walsh wins or Parker loses, Tepp/Cordray are in the playoffs.

Walsh is down by 5 but has Brad Johnson going Monday night. Problem: Cychosz has Ricky Williams going tonight against the Redskins.

Parker is down by 17 with Toomer and Gramatica yet to go.

11/18/03 4:21 PM

The Plover Rage showed some pride and came up big against the Milwaukee Mourning Monks. Russ won the $5 weekly prize and played the spoiler big time. Marc is now out of wild card contention. (As is Cychosz with his loss.)

Wild card race:

Team GB

Kizewski --
Tepp/Cordray 0.5
Walsh 1.5
Parker 1.5
Unfortunately, none of the wild card contenders play each other this week. So there's no one BIG GAME to keep an eye on. Here are the scenarios...

Wade is in. No matter what happens this week, he's a lock for one of the two wild card spots.

The other wild card spot:

  • If Tepp/Cordray win, they're in.

  • If Tepp/Cordray lose and Walsh and Parker both lose, they're in.

  • If Tepp/Cordray lose, Walsh wins, and Parker loses, they're still in because they hold the head-to-head tie-breaker over Walsh.

  • If Tepp/Cordray lose, Walsh wins, and Parker wins, there will be a three-way tie. Because all three aren't in the same division and don't have the same number of head-to-head matchups against each other, the tie-breaker moves to overall points. Tepp/Cordray are up 119 over Walsh and 206 over Parker. In other words, they're a lock there.

  • If Tepp/Cordray lose, Walsh loses, and Parker wins, they are OUT due to their 133-120 loss to Parker in week 2. Man, that would be painful. A 120 point loss in week 2 (The second highest score that week, of course.) keeping you out of the playoffs.
Remember, everyone actually plays in the playoffs. Seeds 5-8 play in the consolation bracket for the chance to win the 5th place $20 prize. Seeds 9 and 10 play in the consolation bracket too, but cannot win 5th place.

McClellan has the 10 seed wrapped up. But the 9 seed is up for grabs. It's even possible that Walsh or Parker could go from wild card contention to the 9 seed if everything happens just right.

Remember, the overall points race does not end this week. It goes through the end of the playoffs. (Jinx forthcoming...) I've led the race since I overcame Tepp/Cordray in week 9. I'm up 39 points at the moment.

Good luck, gentlemen!

11/12/03 12:15 AM

Jack has won seven in a row and is 6-0 in his division! And he clinched the division this week with a 102-97 win over Colin. Culpepper and Tomlinson had 66 points combined.

On the other end of the spectrum... Parker 31 vs. Nguyen 44... yuck.

Wild card race:

Team GB TB

Kizewski --
Tepp/Cordray 0.5 OP1
Walsh 0.5 OP2
Parker 0.5 OP3
Cychosz 1.0
Nguyen 1.5

TB Tie-Breaker
HH Head-To-Head
OP Overall Points
Dude, is it close! Super mega big matchups this week: Parker at Kizewski Walsh at Tepp/Cordray

11/04/03 3:18 PM

The high scorer beat the low second lowest scorer this week. My 115 points was good enough for the weekly win, and Colin's 63 was good enough for... well, good for nothing. Funny thing is, I could have had 137 points, but I played Marques Tuiasosopo instead of Kerry Collins. I need to have my head examined.

My win over Colin also means I've clinched the SI division. I hold the head-to-head tie-breaker over Colin. (Sorry for all the bad news this week, dude.)

The Monks were the second highest scoring team this week, and that's with Eric Moulds (who was on a bye) in their starting lineup. Marc, did you bet McClellan that you could beat him with one hand (or WR) tied behind your back? Well, you did.

The Treehuggers and Penguins both won. Jack's magic number is 2. Despite going 1-2 to start the season, and despite being 6th in total points and 5th in breakdown record, Jack is poised to make the playoffs for the first time since 1998.

With only 3 weeks to go in the regular season, it's time to start tracking the wild card race:

Team GB TB

George * --
Walsh 2.0 HH
Parker 2.0
Kizewski 2.5 OP
Cychosz 2.5
Tepp/Cordray 3.0
Nguyen 4.0
Lobner 5.0 HH
McClellan 5.0

TB Tie-Breaker
HH Head-To-Head
OP Overall Points

* Division leader
Remember, the trade deadline is this week.

10/29/03 2:45 PM

There is just no other way to say this. Wade kicked some serious ass this weekend! His 142 points beat Jayson's 133 earlier in the year for Best Week honors.

Wade beat me. I had the second most points this week. I swear, that happens almost every week.

Week 9's Highlight Matchup: Augie vs. Colin. With a win, I can keep Colin 2 games back. With a loss, I'm only 1 game up, it would be 2 losses in a row, and the signature Augie fade would be in full swing.

It's all me me me this week, huh?

10/26/03 5:10 PM

A reminder that the trade deadline is Week 10. Seeing as how the deadline for announcing trades each week is Thursday at 11:59 PM, that makes the trade deadline Thursday, November 6 at 11:59 PM Central Time.

AFSN Chat Room

This Sunday, I will be monitoring the AFSN Chat Room. Log onto the chat room if you want someone to talk (type) with about the games, your fantasy football matchup, whatever. It's all about community. ;-)

Week 7 Ramblings

Only one upset this week, Brad beating the Idol twins. They go at it again this week.

I won the battle of the division leaders and took home the weekly prize.

Jack beat Wade (by only 3 points). Coupled with Jayson's loss, Jack takes sole posession of first place in the CNN division.

Take a look at the PF (points for) column on the Standings page. Everyone in the CNN division but Wade is 100 or more points back of the Idol twins. And look at the Power Rankings page. The CNN division holds 4 of the 5 top spots.

The Plover Rage won! But they played the Gas Passers, so someone had to win. (Sorry, guys.)

Marc's loss to Colin puts him in serious danger of falling off the radar screen. A loss in week 8 would put Marc in Russ and Matt McClellan's shoes.

10/14/03 7:08 PM

  1. Donovan McNabb sucks. That trade doesn't seem lopsided at all anymore. I stand corrected.

  2. Speaking of the trade... the Rage and Passers suck. Their seasons are over. (Sorry, guys.)

  3. New policy: I will not comment on my team's performance for fear that any positive comment will trigger a (patented) late-season fade.
10/14/03 3:05 PM

Six points have been added to the Gas Passers' score. He's been given credit for Randy McMichael's offensive fumble recovery for a TD. See the "Site News" for more information.

SportsLine can now automatically award defenses points for blocking extra points. (This was not the case when the season started. I've been doing it manually.) I've made the necessary changes to our scoring system and asked SportsLine to "re-run" our league stats. When that's done, those of you with blocked extra points should see the additional point added to your defensive scoring.

10/07/03 3:45 PM

Brad Johnson scored 24, Marvin Harrison scored 29, and the Bucs D scored 9 for Colin on Monday night. That's 62 points scored during one game. That's more points than Jayson, Jack, and Russ scored all weekend! Colin scores 115 points all told and wins the weekly prize.

Jayson lost to Jack leaving me the only undefeated team in the league.

Brad, Russ, and Matt McClellan each have only 1 win. It's do or die time. Week 6 and falling behind the rest of their division-mates. Brad plays Russ, so one of them has to win. Matt plays me.

09/30/03 4:35 PM

As you already know, Tepp & Cordray scored 101 points and won the $5 weekly prize.

Walsh couldn't beat Cychosz in the AFSN Fantasy Baseball championship game, but he squeeked out a victory this week even though Aaron Brooks had -2 points. How'd he do it? Moss and Harrison, baby. The pair may not pay off every week, but they sure did in Week 4.

Parker and I are still undefeated and leading our respective divisions. Parker is 1st in the Power rankings. I'm 3rd. And yes, waa waa, Tepp & Cordray are ranked 2nd but have only been able to muster a 2-2 record.

Four more big intra-division matchups this week:

Parker vs. George
Nguyen vs. Kizewski
Augustine vs. Cychosz
Lobner vs. Tepp / Cordray

09/23/03 2:57 PM

Wade scored 84 points and won the $5 weekly prize.

What a low scoring week!

09/16/03 11:17 AM

Tepp and Cordray, that is some lousy rotten luck.

Jayson scored 133 points with the help of Jamal Lewis and won the $5 weekly prize.

Jack's Carolina defense blocked an extra point on Sunday. (What a game that was.) I added 1 point to his score to make it 84. (For some reason, it doesn't show up on the Scoreboard page, but it is added to his PF column on the Standings page. And it should be reflected on his Teams / Schedule page later on.)

A reminder that from now on, the waivers process will run Tuesday through Saturday night, just like in years past.

09/11/03 11:17 AM

Don't forget about the new Transactions / On the Block feature. Marc and I have posted so far. Don't get left out of the wheelin' and dealin'!

09/09/03 7:50 PM

Tepp scored 109 points and won the $5 weekly prize. If this continues, Tepp is on his way to becoming the most dominant two-sport franchise in AFSN history.

My Atlanta defense blocked an extra point on Sunday. I added 1 point to my score. It came close to that 1 point making the difference. I beat Jack 83-81.

A reminder that the waivers process runs only on Wednesday and Friday nights this year, NOT every night as in the past.
