Tie-Breaker Examples

Example 1
Two teams are tied for the last wildcard spot:
   Team A (7-6), 960 points, defeated Team B during the season 88-60 and 92-91
   Team B (7-6), 944 points, lost to Team A during the season 60-88 and 91-92

Tie-breaker 1 - Overall record
Result: Tied

Tie-breaker 2 - Head-to-head record
Result: Team A advances (Team A was 2-0 vs. Team B during the season)


Example 2
Two teams are tied for the last wildcard spot:
   Team A (7-6), 960 points, defeated Team B 88-60, lost to Team B 92-91
   Team B (7-6), 944 points, lost to Team A 60-88, defeated Team A 92-91

Tie-breaker 1 - Overall record
Result: Tied

Tie-breaker 2 - Head-to-head record
Result: Tied (Team A and Team B were 1-1 during the season)

Tie-breaker 3 - Overall Points
Result: Team A advances (Team A has more overall points than Team B, 960-944)


Example 3
Two teams are tied for the last wildcard spot:
   Team A (7-6), 960 points, defeated Team B 88-60, lost to Team B 92-91
   Team B (7-6), 960 points, lost to Team A 60-88, defeated Team A 92-91

Tie-breaker 1 - Overall record
Result: Tied

Tie-breaker 2 - Head-to-head record
Result: Tied (Team A and Team B were 1-1 during the season)

Tie-breaker 3 - Overall Points
Result: Tied (Team A and Team B both have 960 points in this example)

Tie-breaker 4 - Head-to-head points
Result: Team A advances (Team A outscores Team B 179-152)

   Team B 1-1, 2-0
   Team C 0-2, 2-0

First Wild Card team
Now that Team B has been determined as division champ, Team A, C, and G are analyzed to determine the first wild card spot.

Tie-breaker 1 - Overall record
Result: Tied

Tie-breaker 2 - Head-to-head record
Result: Teams have not played the same number of Head-to-head games.

Tie-breaker 3 - Overall Points
Result: Team A is named to the first wild card position
   Team A 1010 PF
   Team C 980 PF
   Team G 996 PF

Second Wild Card team
Now that Team A has been determined as the first wild card position, Team C and G are analyzed to determine the second and final wild card spot. Note that the tie-breaking formula starts at the beginning each time teams are compared.

Tie-breaker 1 - Overall record
Result: Tied

Tie-breaker 2 - Head-to-head record
Result: Teams have played the same number of Head-to-head games.
   Team C gets the final wild card spot (defeated Team G 104-67 during the season)
