Matt's Message

Unless I say otherwise, the pool participants I refer to live in Central Illinois and work for State Farm.

01/27/03 10:50 AM (the morning after the Super Bowl)

Tampa Bay wins the Super Bowl! Doesn't that sound impossible? They've come a long way since they got rid of their light orange/yellow/pink uniforms.

Final Standings
Rank Player Total Prize
1 Matt Augustine 98 $ 80.00
1 Tracie Augustine 98 80.00
3 Mike Hennings 97 50.00
4 Glenn Wilson 95 11.25
4 Richard Loomis 95 11.25
4 Todd Bowlin 95 11.25
4 Tom Reiter 95 11.25
Last Ken Milliken 58 5.00

Tracie and I tied for first. After 17 weeks of hard work during the regular season, she came up just short of the prize money in the AFSN regular season football pool. It was nice to see her come back in the playoffs and collect.

Mike Hennings has had a profitable football season. He won $45 in the SFFL fantasy football league, and now $50 in the playoff pool. Not too shabby.

And Ken, $5 is better than nothing.

Thanks for playing, everyone. I hope it made the playoffs fun.

01/19/03 10:50 PM (after the Tennessee vs. Oakland game)

Everything is set for the big game. Here's how it will end up depending on who wins the Super Bowl...

01/19/03 6:55 PM (after the Tampa Bay vs. Philadelphia game)

The second upset of the playoffs. Tampa Bay (2 seed) beats Philadelphia (1 seed).

Let the conspiracy rumors fly. I'm in 1st, and my wife, Tracie, is in 2nd.

01/12/03 7:10 PM (after the N.Y. Jets vs. Oakland game)

Two weekends of football and there has only been one upset: Atlanta over Green Bay. And no team has more than 1 win so far. Result?

  • Nine people are tied for 2nd.
  • I'm in 1st all alone with only 2 points less than the highest possible score.
  • The Monkey has fallen to 29th.

01/12/03 4:10 PM (after the San Francisco vs. Tampa Bay game)

The Monkey plummets from 3rd to 20th, thank God. Kim Smith (Bloomington, IL) moves into 1st place. Chris Neufeld (Marshfield, WI), who's been at the top from the start, gets bumped into a tie with me for 2nd.

(This post has been edited. I originally said Kim and Chris were tied for 1st.)

01/11/03 11:15 PM (after the two Saturday games)

The Pittsburgh vs. Tennessee game provided yet another wild finish. Shannon & Russ Lobner (Plover, WI) had a big day, moving up from 11th to tied for 1st. The Monkey continues to do well. How embarrassing.

01/05/03 7:30 PM (after the N.Y. Giants vs. San Francisco game)

That was one of the best games I've ever seen. And what a finish!

For all of the excitement this weekend, there was only one upset -- Atlanta over Green Bay. But there were almost three!

Until next Saturday...

01/05/03 4:30 PM (after the Cleveland vs. Pittsburgh game)

WHAT A GAME! Dan Eberle sure could have used a Cleveland victory.

01/04/03 10:30 PM (after the Atlanta vs. Green Bay game)

No one gave Atlanta more than 4 points... except the Monkey.

People giving Green Bay 11 or 12: Eric Appier, Fran Augustine (my mom - WI), Brian Gaines (Jeff VanSchepen's brother-in-law - Texas), Drew Dockery, Ron Anderson, Roy Johnson, Dave Peek, Julie Watson, Karla Savage, Matthew Spencer, and Gary Daniels. That's 11 people! And 6 more people gave them 10!

01/04/03 6:30 PM (after the Indianapolis vs. N.Y. Jets game)

The Jets win, plunging Clint Reiter (Tom Reiter's son) and Greg Rueter into mourning. They gave the Colts 9. Dan Eberle and Ken Milliken don't feel great either. They gave the Colts 6.

Many thanks to Jeff VanSchepen for coming up with this idea and for his continuing AFSN recruitment efforts.

The Monkey Entry

My wife, Tracie, and I went to Miller Park Zoo (Bloomington, IL). We blind-folded a monkey and had him pick team names and point values out of two hats. Who will beat the monkey? More importantly, who will lose to the monkey?

Well, the "monkey" part of the story isn't true, but the rest is. Would you have been better off randomly assigning point values? We'll find out!
